How to apply discounts in Shopify step by step: "Amount off products"

In our guide "How to Apply Discounts on Shopify: Step-by-Step Guide" we explained how to apply discounts in a general way, however, in this article we focus on how to apply one of the two product discounts Shopify offers on its platform: amount off products.

1. Create the discount of type "Amount off products".

To create this discount, the first thing we must do is to access the Shopify control center, and within the menu, the "Discounts" section.

Then click on "create discount", the button located at the top right. So far, the steps to create the discount are common to any type of discount.

Once the discount is created, select "amount off products" as the discount type, which is the first one that appears in the list.

2. Set the method

Shopify allows us to perform discounts by discount code or automatic discounts, in this case we must choose what type of method is the most suitable for our eCommerce and configure it.

To configure the discount code that customers must enter to use the discount, just type a text of less than 255 characters in the blank space, or press the "generate" button to generate the discount code randomly as shown below.

The configuration of the automatic discount is similar, however, we must write the title of the discount, instead of generating the code.  The title limit is 255 characters.

3. Select your discount value

To configure the value that your discount will have, the first thing to choose is whether it is a discount in the form of a percentage or a fixed amount. In either case, the value of the discount will be written in the blank space to the right of these two options.

As for the products to which this discount applies, Shopify allows you to select two options:

• Specific collections
• Specific products

You will be able to select as many collections as you wish, as well as edit them at any time.

In the case of a fixed amount discount, it is important to define whether the discount can be applied only once per order or per product. That is to say, if I choose a fixed amount discount of 3€, this 3€ will be deducted from the order total, however, if I uncheck the box, the 3€ discount will be applied to each product of the order that meets the conditions.

4. Set the minimum purchase requirements

In this section Shopify offers three possibilities of minimum requirements to apply discounts:

• No minimum requirements
• Minimum Purchase Amount
• Minimum number of items

In the case of the minimum purchase amount, the amount you select will only be applied to the products or collections that are affected by the discount.

5. Select customer eligibility

This means that we must select which customers this discount affects. In this case, Shopify also offers three options:

• All customers
• Specific customer segments
• Specific customers

Customer segments are created within the "Customers" page in the Shopify dashboard.

6. Set the maximum discount usage

In this section, you will be able to limit how many times your discount can be used, being two options offered by Shopify, the limitation of the total number of times the discount can be used or the limitation of one use per customer.

The limitations are not excluding, you can check both boxes or, in case you do not want to limit the discount, it will be enough not to check any box.

7. Select discount duration

This is the last section we need to complete to create our "amount off products" discount in Shopify and, it consists of setting the start date (mandatory) and end date (optional) of the discount.

First, the starting day will be set in the calendar and then the time will be set according to the corresponding time zone.

The end date of the discount is optional, in case the discount is limited in time, just check the box "Set an end date" and add it. Otherwise, the discount will be valid until it is deactivated.
